Hi, I’m Maya

My fascination with photography began in the makeshift darkroom in the basement bathroom of my high school. I spent the next six years of my life playing with light and chemicals; hours spent in the dark watching as particles turned to images on the paper in front of me.

In my last year of university I became fascinated with birth. I spent a few years living overseas in New Zealand, and while there I worked in a birthing centre as a health care assistant. Working in the birthing centre is truly where my love of birth photography developed. Through my friendships with the midwives I worked alongside, I began to delve into this new passion and started to book clients.

There is truly no equivalent to the magic of a birthing space; the intense focus, the feeling of being between two worlds, and the ability to witness the beautiful love and support offered to the birthing person. It is such a privilege to be invited into such an intimate moment and I am so grateful to have had that honour.

I have a BFA in Photography from Concordia University and am currently writing my thesis to complete a Master of Public Health at Simon Fraser University.

I am Based in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil- Waututh Nations.
